The trout (Onchorhyncus mykiss) is the most popular edible Finnish fish in Finland. It is a delicious and versatile food containing great quantities of vitamin D, healthy omega-3 fatty acids and proteins.

To ensure optimal growth and feed utilisation, the fish are fed using automated feeders controlled by advanced software. The quantity of feed and distribution timing are regulated based on parameters including water temperature, fish size and amount, the oxygen content of the water and the season. This technique ensures optimal feed utilisation while minimising residual waste – all the feed is consumed while guaranteeing the growth and welfare of the fish.

Nordic Fish Sustainability Reports

The Nordic Fish Group published Finland’s first sustainability report for the fish farming industry in May 2024. Since then, sustainability reporting has been updated annually. Kalaneuvos, Nordic Trout, and Martin Kala are part of the Nordic Fish Group.

Sustainability Report 2025

The Nordic Fish Group’s 2025 Sustainability Report was published on 18 May 2026. The report, aligned with the requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), provides an overview of fish farming and fish processing from the perspectives of climate, water pollution, the company’s own workforce, and business conduct.

In 2025, particular focus was placed on:

permitting strategies aimed at reducing nutrient emissions

improving feed conversion ratios

ASC certification

reducing water consumption

packaging solutions containing less plastic

phasing out hand filleting in Kalaneuvos’ production operations

employee well-being

The report highlights the Group’s continued efforts to improve environmental performance, operational efficiency, and social responsibility throughout its fish farming and processing value chain.

Sustainability Report 2024

The Nordic Fish Group published its 2024 Sustainability Report for the fish farming and fish processing industry on 27 June 2025.

Aligned with the requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the report provides an overview of fish farming and fish processing from the perspectives of climate, water pollution, the company’s own workforce, and business conduct.

The Nordic Fish Group’s vision is to be the most responsible operator in the sustainable fish farming and processing industry. Through the Sustainability Report, the Group presents concrete actions aimed at mitigating and adapting to climate change, as well as preventing pollution across its operations.

The 2024 Sustainability Report also outlines the impacts, risks, and opportunities related to the Group’s workforce and business activities, providing a comprehensive view of its sustainability performance and long-term development efforts.

Sustainability Report 2023: The First Sustainability Report in the Finnish Fish Industry

Nordic Trout published Finland’s first sustainability report for the fish farming industry on 15 May 2024. The report is unique, as it is the first sustainability report both for Nordic Trout and for the Finnish fish industry as a whole.

The report covers Nordic Trout’s environmental responsibility, social responsibility, and governance (ESG) performance for the year 2023.

The report was released on Finland’s National Fishing Day, an occasion aimed, among other things, at promoting diverse fishing practices and increasing the consumption of fish.

This pioneering report reflects Nordic Trout’s commitment to transparency and responsible operations, while establishing a benchmark for sustainability reporting within the Finnish fish farming sector.
